DALLAS – The Miami Marlins have agreed to trade infielder Jake Burger to the Texas Rangers in exchange for three minor leaguers, a league source told The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. According to ESPN’s Alden González, the Rangers will send infielders Echedry Vargas and Max Acosta and starting pitcher Brayan Mendoza to Miami in the deal.
Burger, 28, appeared in 137 games for the Marlins in 2024, hitting .250/.301/.460 with 29 home runs and 76 RBIs and a .761 OPS while splitting time at first base, third base and designated hitter. Burger, who is a year away from arbitration, will be under team control for the next four years. The prospects returning to Miami have not yet been named.
The trade caps off an eventful day for the Rangers, who re-signed starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi to a three-year, $75 million deal. Eovaldi, who was No. 13 on The Athletic’s Free Agent Big Board, will turn 35 before the start of next season. His 170 2/3 innings last season were the second-most he’s thrown since 2014.
The addition of Burger gives the Rangers a right-handed hitting option to match with left-handed hitting first baseman Nathaniel Lowe and another possibility for the team’s designated hitter spot.
