ASHBURN, Va. – Marshon Lattimore’s long-awaited debut with the Washington Commanders will, at least for the four-time Pro Bowl cornerback, fortuitously come against his former team. New teammate Bobby Wagner offered advice on the unique scenario set for Sunday in New Orleans, where the ex-Saint spent his first seven-plus NFL seasons.

“Control your emotions and then go crazy,” the longtime linebacker said. “Talk as much trash as you can.”

Lattimore’s comments after Friday’s practice – and given official clearance to play after sitting with a lingering hamstring injury — suggest he won’t lack for motivation. Washington acquired the Saints’ 2017 first-round selection hours before the Nov. 5 trade deadline.

“Of course. I’d be lying if I said it didn’t. They traded me away. I’m going back to show them why they shouldn’t have. I’m happy where I’m at, but, you know it be extra motivation for the game.”

For the playoff-pushing Commanders, in a season defined by significant organizational changes, the defense is set for a notable makeover with four regular season games remaining.

“There’s a guy out there who you know has the ability to lock down a side, travel, and do all those amazing things,” Wagner said amidst his 13th consecutive season with at least 100 tackles. “It’s dope having someone out there like that. … It will be fun.”

Lattimore missed five consecutive games, four with Washington.

“I feel good. I’m ready to play,” Lattimore said. “I’ve been gone for a long time.”

The Commanders added the cover corner to help shore up a significant weakness and provide their long-term vision with a core player under contract through 2026. After losing three consecutive games, Washington rolled Tennessee 42-19 on Dec. 1 before getting needed rest during the bye week. At 8-5, the Commanders hold the NFC’s third and final wild-card spot. Now, they will incorporate one of the best at his position.

“We’re excited to get him part of the crew and get him going. It’s his first game here with everybody,” coach Dan Quinn said. “And so we’re all just excited because he’s put in the work over the last few weeks and now it’s time to fully bring him into the Commanders team.”
