Wolves head coach Gary O’Neil says star forward Matheus Cunha will “definitely not” leave Wolves in the January transfer window.

The Brazil international has netted seven goals in the first 12 games of the Premier League season including four in his last four games, prompting speculation about possible interest in January.

Cunha, 25, has two and a half years remaining on his current contract having joined Wolves, initially on loan, in January 2023.

“Matheus definitely won’t leave in January,” said O’Neil in his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Bournemouth. “Definitely not.

“Mine and Matheus’ relationship and his understanding of what we’re trying to do here is exceptionally good.

“I don’t foresee there being any problems at all in January with Matheus Cunha contract-wise. But I’ll leave that to the club.

“We have a real focus, Matheus included, on tomorrow’s game and making sure we’re in the best shape to beat Bournemouth, then the contract staff will obviously be handled by the football club.”

O’Neil will welcome defenders Santiago Bueno and Craig Dawson and forward Pablo Sarabia back into the squad for tomorrow after all three missed last weekend’s 4-1 victory at Fulham. Bueno and Sarabia were both injured while Dawson was ill.

“They’ve all had a decent amount of training this week,” said O’Neil. “Then we just need to decide how much is right for them in tomorrow’s game, but it’s good to have all three of them back because we were a little bit short squad-wise last weekend.”

Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone also missed last weekend through illness but O’Neil said: “I expect him to be in the matchday squad tomorrow.”
