The NHL Department of Player Safety announced Sunday it has handed New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe an eight-game suspension for boarding/elbowing Dallas Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen. Rempe now has two suspensions in his 22-game NHL career. He got four games last season for a hit to the head on Jonas Siegenthaler.

Rempe hit Heiskanen into the boards Friday, and his arm drove the star defenseman’s head into the glass. He received a five-minute major for elbowing, a two-minute minor for roughing and a game misconduct. Rempe has now been ejected from four of his first 22 NHL games.
The Rangers called the 6-foot-8 Rempe up ahead of the Dallas game. With the team struggling, coach Peter Laviolette wanted to mix things up, and Rempe brings an energy the team clearly values. He now has played in five games this season but has yet to log a point. He has 24 penalty minutes on the year, 17 of which came from the Heiskanen hit in Dallas.
Rempe made the Rangers opening-night roster but has spent most of the year with AHL Hartford, where he’s gotten playing time in all situations as the Rangers try to develop him into a more complete player.
