Reading's Ruben Selles granted permission to speak to Hull City

Reading manager Ruben Selles has been granted permission to speak to Hull City regarding their head coach vacancy.

Selles, 41, has just over 18 months remaining on his Reading contract, so Hull would need to pay compensation, although that is not expected to be an issue.

The Spaniard oversaw Reading’s 3-0 win over Cambridge on Tuesday night to take the club into the League One play-off spots.

It was his side’s 11th win out of their last 12 fixtures at home, despite off-field issues regarding a sale of the club continuing to drag on.

Hull sacked Tim Walter last week following a run of nine games without a win, culminating in a 2-0 defeat by Sheffield Wednesday that left them in the Championship’s relegation zone.

Selles has been widely praised for not only steadying the ship at Reading and taking them into the play-offs, but also for operating under extremely difficult circumstances.

Hull, meanwhile, are being led by interim head coach Andy Dawson and lost 3-1 away to Middlesbrough on Saturday.

That was a fifth consecutive loss and deepens relegation worries just six months after narrowly missing out on the Championship play-offs under Rosenior.

Owner Acun Ilicali, the Turkish media personality, has always targeted promotion to the Premier League since arriving in 2022 but has now sacked four managers in three years.

Although they have been linked to several coaches since sacking Walter, Selles has always been Ilicali’s preferred candidate.

Hull face Blackburn Rovers at home on Saturday while Reading are in action at Wycombe Wanderers on the same day.
