After missing the postseason for the third straight season, the Boston Red Sox are making several changes to their major-league coaching staff.
A team source confirmed to The Athletic that the Red Sox have fired first base coach Andy Fox, bullpen coach Kevin Walker, assistant hitting coach Luis Ortiz, mental skills coach Rey Fuentes, trainer Ben Chadwick, and bullpen catcher Mani Martinez.
The Boston Globe first reported the news.
Fox, who joined the organization as a minor-league coordinator in 2011, served on the MLB staff as field coordinator in 2022 and 2023 before shifting to first base coach this past season. He also helped coordinate infield instruction.
Walker joined the Red Sox staff as an assistant pitching coach in 2020 before shifting to bullpen coach at the start of the 2021 season. Walker had coached at every minor-league affiliate in the Red Sox system, including serving as pitching coach for Triple-A Pawtucket in 2018 and 2019.
Ortiz had served as an assistant hitting coach since the start of 2022 and had previously spent 10 seasons as a hitting coach for the Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres.
Fuentes joined the Red Sox as a mental skills coordinator at the start of the 2020 season after seven season with the Chicago Cubs.
Chadwick had been a member of the Red Sox training staff since 2023 after working as a strength and conditioning coach for Double-A Portland in 2019 and holding the same position for the Triple-A club from 2020-22.
Martinez joined the organization in 2005 and had served as a bullpen catcher from more than a decade.
As of Wednesday, the rest of the coaching staff remained with the team, including bench coach Ramón Vázquez, pitching coach Andrew Bailey, hitting coach Pete Fatse, assistant hitting coach Ben Rosenthal, third base coach Kyle Hudson and game-planning coordinator Jason Varitek.
