Ruben Amorim will talk with Ruud van Nistelrooy about his Manchester United future when he flies in to England on Monday.
Van Nistelrooy has won three and drawn one of his four games in interim charge following the sacking of Erik ten Hag, but his status as a coach under Amorim is unclear.
Amorim stopped short of saying Van Nistelrooy would continue at the club, and he is already thinking about the shape of his backroom team.
He has expressed a desire to bring Emanuel Ferro, Adelio Candido, and Carlos Fernandes with him as assistant coaches as part of six Sporting Lisbon staff members on his wishlist.
Van Nistelrooy only returned to Old Trafford in the summer as assistant manager to Ten Hag after leaving as a player in 2006 having become a cult hero for his 150 goals for the club.
Amorim signed off in style from Sporting with a stunning 4-2 comeback victory at Braga and asked by The Athletic about Van Nistelrooy’s role, the new United head coach signed said: “About a legend of the club. He did a great job. I have to talk with him tomorrow. Then I will explain everything. I am very clear and I will tell you like it is. Let’s wait until tomorrow.”
Amorim also dropped a large hint he will play the 3-4-3 system that has brought him two Portuguese titles at Sporting.
There has been some debate on whether he would stick with the formation given the personnel in United’s squad, but he said: “I know how I am going to play in the beginning, because you have to start with a structure that you know.
“Then you will adapt with the players that you have, some injuries, or no injuries, what kind of players have the abilities to defend, attack, I will discover that in the next few weeks.
“We don’t have a lot of time to train, so I have to show something that I know very well. You can take whatever you want from that.”
Amorim’s first match in charge will be the Premier League trip to Ipswich on November 24.
