Ruud van Nistelrooy: I will help and serve Manchester United as long as I'm needed

Manchester United interim head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy has said he will “help and serve” the club for as long as he is needed.

48-year-old Van Nistelrooy oversaw Wednesday night’s 5-2 Carabao Cup victory at home to Leicester City in his first game as interim head coach, following the club’s dismissal of Erik ten Hag on Monday.

United are working on a deal to appoint Sporting Lisbon head coach Ruben Amorim on a permanent arrangement, but Van Nistelrooy — previously head coach at PSV Eindhoven — insisted he would be keen to remain at Old Trafford in a new coaching setup.

“Of course,” Van Nistelrooy told Sky Sports when asked if he would stay at the club if they wanted to retain his services. “I came here as an assistant, to help the club, and now on this role I’m helping as long as I’m needed.

“In the future in any capacity I am here to help the club further, to build towards the future. That’s what I’m here for.”

When asked if he would want to return to his position as a coach working under a new head coach, the former striker said: “I’m here to help, I’m here to serve, I’m here to give my everything for the club. There are so many people round me that want the best for the club and that will never change.”

Van Nistelrooy scored 150 goals for United across five seasons during his playing career, helping the club win the 2003 Premier League title.

United are next in action at home to Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday, with it remaining uncertain if Van Nistelrooy will remain in charge for that match.
