United States men’s national team striker Josh Sargent will be out until 2025 due to a groin injury.
Sargent was absent from the Norwich City squad which lost 2-1 to Cardiff City on Saturday. Head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup confirmed after that match that Sargent was dealing with a groin issue and provided another update on the 24-year-old ahead of Tuesday’s game against Sheffield Wednesday.
“He (Sargent) is going to require surgery, so we’re talking eight weeks,” Thorup said. “It’s not the ideal scenario for anybody. We have options and possibilities for other players to come in.”
Sargent has scored four goals and provided five assists in 12 Championship appearances this season, with Norwich sitting 10th in the English second tier, three points off the play-offs.
The injury means Sargent will miss the next USMNT camp, with Mauricio Pochettino expected to announce his squad for this month’s games later this week.
The U.S. face Jamaica away and then at home in the CONCACAF Nations League quarter-final legs on November 15 and 19 respectively.
Sargent was the most experienced USMNT forward in the squad which lost to Mexico 2-0 and beat Panama 2-0 in a pair of friendlies during the October international break. The former Werder Bremen man started both games and has scored five goals in 27 appearances for his national team.
