Valencia’s Copa de Rey match against Parla Escuela on Wednesday is expected to be postponed due to the extreme weather conditions forecast for the coming days.
Red weather warnings for “extreme danger” are in place across southern parts of the country, including Valencia.
Valencia’s first-round tie against the third-tier side is due to take place at Estadio Las Américas in Madrid, but the club made a request to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to postpone the fixture saying it was the “most appropriate measure” with strong winds and heavy rain expected to cause widespread travel disruption.
Spain has been hit by torrential rain and hailstorms, triggering flash flooding across multiple regions in recent days.
Valencia are bottom of La Liga having taken just one win from their opening 11 games this season, heaping pressure on head coach Ruben Baraja.
“I am standing here with the confidence, conviction, commitment and energy to turn the situation around,” said Baraja at a news conference on Tuesday, prior to Valencia’s request for a postponement to Wednesday’s outing.
“Above all, I assume the greatest responsibility because I am the one who heads the team and the group.
“If things do not work out, I am the first person to be responsible and I am standing here to endure or bear the pressure that comes with being in the situation we are in.”
Valencia are set to return to league action at home to second-placed Real Madrid on Saturday.
