TV cameras are tracking Wayne Rooney this season for a documentary series that will follow his time as manager of Plymouth Argyle.

Rooney, 39, was appointed at Plymouth this summer and has endured a mixed start so far with the club 18th in the Championship standings.

This is Rooney’s first job back in management after a challenging 83-day spell at Birmingham City last season. He previously managed Derby County and DC United.

A source close to the project who spoke to The Athletic on condition of anonymity said it was at a very early stage and no contracts had yet been signed.

The focus of the series would focus on both Rooney and Plymouth, helping drum up interest in the club. It is not yet clear which streaming service the series will appear on.

Filming began at the start of the season, with cameras shadowing Rooney both on and off the pitch as he settles into his new surroundings.

Rooney is living in the city’s trendy Royal William Yard, around a 10 minute drive from Home Park — a decision that has been welcomed by Plymouth’s supporters. He returns home to see his family in Cheshire once or twice a week, depending on the fixture schedule.

Since taking the job, he has been spotted at various pubs and bars around the city, joining fans for a karaoke rendition of Ed Sheeran at the Cider Press at the end of August for example.

News of the series comes ahead of the launch of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here on ITV on Sunday November 17, with Wayne’s wife, Coleen, the show’s big draw this year.

Plymouth are next in action on Friday night at home to Watford.
