Wolves defender Yerson Mosquera will likely miss the rest of the Premier League season after scans confirmed an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee.
The Colombia international, who has started all five league games this season, also sustained damage to a medial ligament in a challenge with Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers on Saturday.
Mosquera, who made his Premier League debut on the opening day of the season at Arsenal, will undergo surgery in the next two weeks to repair the ligaments.
The 23-year-old left the pitch on a stretcher during the second half of Wolves’ 3-1 defeat at Villa Park.
Wolves’ head of high performance Phil Hayward said: “Yerson has now had all of the various assessments and scans which unfortunately confirm injuries to the medial collateral ligament (MCL) and the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
“We will be visiting specialists in the coming days to finalise the plan for surgery; this will take place in the next two weeks.
“Clearly there is a long recovery period ahead for Yerson, and the club will be providing all the support he needs to ensure a successful rehabilitation and a return to competition in due course “Timescales are difficult to state prior to surgery but it is highly unlikely he will feature again this season.”
Wolves return to action at home to Liverpool on Saturday with another centre-back, Toti, battling a hamstring injury.
If he fails to recover in time, Craig Dawson and Santiago Bueno would be Gary O’Neil’s only senior centre-back options.
“It was obviously a big blow in the game for us with the time it came,” O’Neil said following the Villa game. “And it would be a big blow for us to lose him for a significant amount of time.
“He plays in an area of the pitch that we are already short in and he was performing at a very high level for us in that area. Off the back of the back of the transfer window closing, it’s not an area that we could afford to lose someone in.”
